Violena Byrd Avis, 95, of Marion, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, November 19, 2024 at her home.
A native of McDowell County, she was born April 8, 1929 to the late Charlie Byrd and Esther Rector Byrd. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by seven siblings, Bonnie Williams, Faye Jenkins, Alma Webster, Thurman Byrd, KC Byrd, Arthur Byrd, and Willie Mae Lawing.
Violena was a woman of many talents and interests. She found joy in gardening, where she nurtured beautiful flowers and plants around her home and garden. An avid card player, she enjoyed the laughter and camaraderie that came from friendly games with family and friends. Her culinary skills were nothing short of remarkable; she loved cooking and sharing meals, creating an environment where everyone felt welcomed and at home. She enjoyed caring for her home, and she especially enjoyed decorating it.
One of Violena's proudest accomplishments was her profound dedication to service alongside her husband for 35 years in construction ministry. Together, they traveled to various locations, working tirelessly on churches and camps. Whether it involved painting, cooking for the workers, or lending a hand wherever there was a need, Violena exemplified a true servant's heart. Together, they touched countless lives along the way.
Left to cherish her memories are her husband of 67 years, Richard Avis; two sons, Tim Avis (Patricia) and Terry Avis; four grandchildren, Jessica White, Natalie Groff, Johnna Gruel, and Danielle Smith; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Lora Ray Clontz; and one brother, Ronald Byrd.
