Vera Bailey Stroupe

Vera Bailey Stroupe, 91, of Old Fort, passed away Saturday, October 21, 2023 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

A native of Buncombe County, she was born October 31, 1931 to the late Walter Herman Bailey and Ocie Mae Corn Bailey.

Vera spent her life caring for others. She took care of countless babies over the years and was known as “Granny” to all. She was a strong and faithful servant of God who loved her Bible. She loved music, and she always held songs close to her heart. When she wasn’t singing, she was humming. Vera liked to travel with her late husband, and she became a fan of soap operas and wrestling later in life. She loved taking care of her home and yard. She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Samuel Stroupe; son, Rudy Stroupe; a daughter, Connie Hurt and son-in-law, Ronnie Hurt, Sr.; three siblings, Charles David Bailey, Doris Bailey Reed, and Homer Calvin Bailey; and a niece, Teresa Reed Bailey.

She is survived by a daughter, Judy Quinn (Jim); five grandchildren, Doug Quinn, Shelly Hughes (Midget), Brian Stroupe, Carla Thomas (Joe), and Robbie Stroupe; nine great grandchildren, Beth Self (Jake), Roger Hughes, Breanna Dreadfulwater (Aaron), Ashley Stroupe, Skylar Stroupe, Marissa Hughes, Joseph Thomas, Shyann Stroupe, and Jaden Stroupe; six great-great grandchildren, Jaina, Kendall, Avery, Greyson, Ivan, and Eliza; two brothers, Burnice Ray Bailey and Herman Lee Bailey; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Rick Wood officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. Burial will be at Sky View Memorial Park.
