Master Trooper Timothy Wayne Stephenson, 59, of Marion, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 20, 2023 at UNC Health Blue Ridge.
He was born in Asheville on June 2, 1964 to the late Pastor Francis Daniel Stephenson, who was a Baptist minister for more than 55 years, and the late Betty Jo Stephenson. He is also preceded in death by a brother, Francis Daniel Stephenson, Jr.; and a nephew, Nathan Wolff.
Tim retired from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol in 2019, having earned the rank of Master Trooper. He formerly was a Deputy with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and a Reservist with the McDowell County Sheriff's Office. He later served at McDowell Technical Community College as a security officer. He also was a NRA firearms instructor. He was well known and highly respected throughout his career. He had a degree in electrical engineering as well. Tim was an avid NASCAR and football fan. He loved music of all genres, but he had a special appreciation for gospel music. He also had a heart for animals, especially horses.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Kimberly Ann Clontz Stephenson; two stepchildren, Joshua Gouge and Candace Gouge Trumble (Jordy); siblings, Corliss “CJ” Wolff and Roger Stephenson; niece, Meggan Wolff-Jackson (Brent); nephew, Christopher Ledford; and a special great niece, Caroline Grace “Honey Bunny” Jackson.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m.
