Thomas Auburn Hendley, better known as Tommy to family and friends, went to be with the Lord on the afternoon of Monday, March 17, 2025 at the Charles George VA Medical Center. He was 88 years old.
A native of McDowell County, Tommy was born on November 11, 1936 to the late Ken Shuford and Mildred “Tommie” Hilton Shuford.
Tommy lived a life of unwavering dedication and sincerity, marked by his steadfast Christian faith. He formerly worked for Biltmore Dairies where he later retired after a number of years of service.
Beyond his professional successes, Tommy was a proud veteran of the United States Army, having served his country with honor. His military service instilled in him values of courage and discipline, which he carried into every aspect of his life. Tommy was a faithful member of Clinchfield Baptist Church. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, and it led to a deep-rooted belief in service which was clearly evident throughout his life.
He was a member of the Pleasant Gardens Community Center and one of the founders of the Fishers of Men ministry, a group dedicated to building ramps for those in need. Through this initiative, Tommy’s leadership and compassion made a true difference in the lives of many in the community. He was also a proud member of the Lion’s Club. Known for his honesty and moral fortitude, his genuine spirit touched lives in ways that will continue to resonate long after his passing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Hendley, and one grandson, Brandon Thomas Hendley.
He is survived by his two children, Stefanie Hendley and Tommy Hendley (Donna); one grandson, Boris Hendley; one brother, Bill Hendley (Olga); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other beloved extended family.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 21, 2025 from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. at Clinchfield Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Terry Roach officiating. Burial will follow the service at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church Cemetery.
