Suzanne A Spain, 64, of Nebo, NC, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 31 2021 at her residence. Suzanne was born in South Bend, Indiana on November 28 1956, to late Robert E Spain and Jean Audrey Spain. She attended Mishawaka High School in Mishawaka, Indiana.
Suzanne enjoyed the natural world and surrounded herself with it every chance she got. It grounded her. Her early love of nature started with family camping trips to Edisto Island SC when she was very young. Swimming in the ocean, hunting fossils and exploring the wonders of nature here created amazing memories which segued into nature conservation, bird watching (like her mother) and back packing.
Suzanne loved hiking at Isle Royale National Park. This park became her favorite destination to relax, unwind and take in all that God had created. This island park is completely surrounded by Lake Superior. Hiking the isolated trails from Windigo to Rock Harbor provided 40 miles of rugged nature at it’s finest. This experience was always shared with her brother and sister-in-law creating bonding memories that she reflected on almost daily. Suzanne made this pilgrimage 6 times total.
Through her love of nature and contacts from dear friends, Suzanne became involved with the nonprofit A Clean Wilson Creek. This nonprofit is committed to protecting and preserving Wilson Creek located in Caldwell county NC for generations to come. She served the group as the Assistant Director, Volunteer Coordinator, as well as volunteering for whatever task was at hand. Suzanne was passionate in this cause and truly loved Wilson Creek for all that it has to offer.
Suzanne is survived by her life partner Dave LaLonde of Nebo NC, her sister Michelle Spain Klucznik and her husband Raymond of Phoenix AZ, her brother Michael G Spain and his wife Sherry of Summerville SC and her niece Lauren A. Manning and her husband Todd of Glendale AZ.
Suzanne’s Life will be celebrated at a later date when it is safe to gather in large numbers.
