Sondra Lynn Scruggs Jones

On Saturday, June 18, 2022, Sondra Lynn Scruggs Jones passed suddenly from this present life into the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ.  Sondra was born March 31, 1947 in Cliffside, North Carolina, the only child of the late Melba Lee Blackwell Scruggs and Clyde Carson Scruggs, and lived in the small town she loved until moving to McDowell County in 2008.  

In recent years, Sondra lived in the Pleasant Gardens community with her daughter, Kristi Jones Hawkins and son-in-law, Steve Hawkins, and their two sons, John Sawyer Hawkins and Avery Cooper Hawkins, who are her only surviving immediate family.  

Sondra loved life and loved her family well, nurturing and raising her daughter alone and faithfully caring for her father, and then her mother, who lived with her until their passing.  She especially cherished the title of “Oma” (Grandma) to Sawyer and Cooper.  Her love and laughter will fill the ears and hearts of her loved ones until we one day gather again at the Lord’s table.

Sondra graduated from CHASE Highschool in 1965 and after attending Cecil’s Business College, worked at Northwestern Bank in Forest City and was retired from Cone Mills in Cliffside. 

Her home church, Cliffside Baptist, remained dear to her, and she was an active member of Blue Ridge Church in Marion.

Ms. Jones’ family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m., in the chapel of Beam Funeral Service, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family are encouraged to make memorial contributions in Sondra’s name to the North Carolina Down Syndrome Alliance (ncdsalliance.org) or the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (add.org).
