Samuel Lee Ball, Sr., 82, of Nebo, peacefully passed into eternity on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at the Charles George VA Medical Center.
He was born in Buncombe County on November 22, 1941 to the late Walter Lee Ball, Sr., and Pierce Louise “Helen” Ashton Houser. He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandparents who raised him, Samuel Cleveland Ashton and Mary Virginia Love Ashton; and four siblings, Bobbie McCormick, Jackie Dupell, Walter Lee Ball, Jr., and Patricia Marion. He was also predeceased by several animal companions including, Rose, Chloe, Pesterbox, and Lil Bit.
Sam held numerous associate degrees, primarily in the automotive field, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning and excellence in his craft. He graduated from Fruitland Baptist Bible College, where he furthered his knowledge and deepened his understanding of faith. Sam was an envoy member of Beta Sigma Phi.
A proud veteran, Sam served three years in the Army during the Vietnam War, experiencing service both in Vietnam and Germany. His commitment to his country continued as he spent an additional 13 years in the National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion Post 56. His military service was characterized by a sense of duty and honor that defined much of his life.
Known for his laid-back demeanor, Sam had a natural talent for working with his hands and tinkering with various projects. His warm spirit and dedication to family and country will continue to inspire those he touched throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Joyce Luther-Ball; three children, Samuel Lee Ball, Jr. (Christine), Loretta Morrow, and Angela LeCrone (Bobby); five grandchildren, Jessica Morrow, Emily Roberts, Jewelia LeCrone, Briana Edwards, and Joey LeCrone; three great-granddaughters, Rachel Morrow, Kaitlyn Yow, and Brooklynn Morrow; two siblings, Walter Lee Ball, Jr. (Gail) and Beci Amstutz; brother-in-law, Fred Dupell; and sister-in-law, Janice Davis. Also left to cherish Sam’s memory are special nieces, Ellie Luther, Amy Towe, and Charlene Luther; a caregiver who was like a granddaughter, Lisa Buchanan; and special friends, Oscar and Joyce Creech.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. The funeral service officiated by Connie Swindell will begin at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
