Robert R. Lewis, age 92, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 08, 2017 at Autumn Care of Marion. A native of McDowell County, North Carolina, born June 03, 1925, he was the son of the late Baxter and Fannie Mathis Lewis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Lee Lewis.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, Robert retired in 1985 as a Railroad Conductor with CSX Railroad, which was at one time, Clinchfield Railroad. He was a founding member of the Hankins-North Fork Volunteer Fire Department’s Board of Directors. Robert, who loved his church family, was a member of Hankins Baptist Church, where he at one time was superintendent of the Sunday School; and served as a deacon.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Betty Bartlett Lewis of the home; three sons, Bobby Lewis of Marion, Gregory Scott Lewis (Debbie) of Marion and Gary Dean Lewis of Cherokee; five grandchildren, Christopher, Jason, Matthew and Andrew Lewis; and Jeanne Vaughn; and five great grandchildren. Robert is also survived by niece, Rebecca Washburn of Florida; and his special friend, Jack Lail of Florida.
A celebration of Robert’s life will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Hankins Baptist Church with Rev. Danny White officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
