Ray “Red” Lawing, 95, of Nebo, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Rose Hill Retirement Community with his family by his side.
A native of McDowell County, he was born September 5, 1927 to the late Floyd and Rittie Pyatt Lawing. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Audrey Alyne Moody Lawing; and siblings, Hazel Carswell, Naomi King, Opal Howard, Shirley Hensley, Dorothy Merrill, Ralph Lawing, John Lawing, and Ab Lawing.
Red was a lifelong member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church. He loved his church and enjoyed serving in various capacities such as Sunday School Superintendent, church treasurer, deacon, and as caretaker of the cemetery. He was employed for 42 years at Marion Manufacturing, and he also served in the U.S. Army as a cook. Red will be remembered for the large garden he grew each year. He gave away most of his produce to everyone he met.
He is survived by his children, Ronnie Lawing (Llewellyn) and Regina Lawing Robinson (Michael); three grandchildren, Tiffany McHone (Frank), Jason Robinson (Jessica), and Jessica McEntire (Michael); three great grandchildren, Jaxon, Taylor, and Brandon; sister, Zelda Curtis; and special friends, Danny and Revonda Letterman.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Doug McPeters officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Rose Hill and Hospice of the Carolina Foothills for the exceptional care they provided.
