Nina "Ninie" Lee Gibbs Johnson

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, November 23, 2021, Nina “Ninie” Gibbs Johnson passed away at Rose Hill Retirement Community. A native of Yancey County, Nina was born on November 15, 1936 to the late Ed and Lula Caroway Gibbs.

Nina was a longtime member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed sharing meals with her family. She loved the outdoors including fishing and working with her flowers. Nina also enjoyed watching birds, especially hummingbirds. But above all these wonderful things, she mostly loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memories are two children, Martha Johnson Poteat (Tim A.) and Thomas Johnson (Jody); one sister, Grace Simmons (James); four grandchildren, Lara Beth Poteat Fair, Benjamin Andrew Poteat (Chelsi), TJ Johnson (Lee) and Lacey Lee Poteat. Also surviving Nina are eight great-grandchildren, Cooper Fair, Hudson Fair, Chloe Fair, Lilliana Poteat, Roman Poteat, Aubrie Poteat, Issac Johnson and Owen Johnson.

A graveside service for Nina will be held on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at the Caroway Family Cemetery in Yancey County.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Nina’s memory to the Rose Hill Activity Fund, 120 Fleming Avenue, Marion, North Carolina 28752.
