Mildred Black Elkins, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at her residence on April 18, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on January 16, 1953, in Yancey County, she lived a life marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to those she cherished.
Mildred was not only meticulous about keeping her yard mowed and her home immaculate but also took great pleasure in expressing her love for her family through thoughtful gestures. Each Sunday, she would carefully select matching outfits for herself and her late husband, Ernest Wayne Elkins, who predeceased her on March 24, 2025. This attention to detail was a testament to the deep bond they shared throughout their marriage.
A passionate cook and baker, Mildred was known for her delightful creations, particularly her beautiful wedding cakes, hand decorated birthday cakes for family and festive trays of sliced cakes that she would prepare each Christmas for family and friends. Her culinary talents brought joy to many, and her home was often filled with the aroma of freshly baked goods and love.
Mildred's greatest pride came from her role as a grandmother. She adored her grandsons, Kaden Hunter Elkins and Kamden Chase Elkins, showering them with affection and often cheering them on as they played sports. They lovingly referred to her as "Nana," a name that captured the warmth and nurturing spirit she embodied.
She is survived by her son, Kenny Wayne Elkins and his wife, Emily; her sisters, Geneva Black Pate and Shirley Jean Carroll; her sister-in-law, Becky Black; her grandsons, Kaden Hunter Elkins and Kamden Chase Elkins; and her special friends, Sharon Hamby and Dottie Parker, who all will miss her dearly.
Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ernest, her father Frank Black, and her mother Juanita Byrd Black and brother Jay Black.
A visitation will be held at Beam Funeral Service & Crematory in Marion, NC, on April 25, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service celebrating her life at 2:00 PM. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched, and she will be remembered for her unwavering spirit, her love of family, and her generous heart.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Rachel Inman for the wonderful care given to Mildred during her time in hospice care.
Memorials may be made to Turkey Cove Baptist Church.
