Mary B. Mode, age 95, of the Glenwood Community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at Autumn Care of Marion. A native of Cleveland County, North Carolina, she was born August 28, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Marcus and Willie Hoyle Beam.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Mode; four brothers and five sisters.
A graduate of Waco High School, Mary was valedictorian of her class. She was also a graduate of Asheville Teacher College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education. Mary, for 31 years, had taught elementary school for the McDowell County Schools. She proudly served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross for 20 years.
A member of the Glenwood United Methodist Women, Mary was also a charter member of Glenwood United Methodist Church where she served as Sunday school teacher and member of the choir.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews; along with special friends, Richard and Marie Terry and their daughter, Alissa; and many other special friends and church family.
A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Glenwood United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Burleson and Rev. Jim Brewer officiating. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Mode’s memory are asked to consider, Glenwood Untied Methodist Church, 1385 Old US 221 South, Marion, North Carolina 28752.
