Mary Edith Smith

Mary Edith Smith, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, went home to be with the Lord on the morning of Thursday, July 12, 2018 at her residence in Marion.  A native of Yancey County, North Carolina, born November 4, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Austin and Maude Huskins Buchanan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thary Eugene Smith (December 21, 1981); and one son, Thary Roger Smith (February 12, 2000). 

Mary Edith, who retired from Baxter’s Health Care, was an avid reader, gardener and enjoyed watching older westerns, but most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and her Fall Beach trip.  She was a member of West Court Baptist Church in Marion.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jean Poteat (Curtiss) of Mills River; one sister, Irene Williams; five brothers, Roy Buchanan, Eugene Buchanan, Worley Buchanan, Larry Buchanan and Phillip Buchanan; three grandchildren, Allison Styles (Keith), Dusty Morgan (Divinity) and Luzette Anderson (Russell); four great grandchildren, Kassie Styles, Piper Styles, Delena Morgan and Delora Morgan; and one daughter-in-law, Teresa Smith.  Mary was blessed with many friends, especially her “lunch buddy”, Vaughtie Allison; and family friend, Kathy Hollifield. 

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 14, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service & Crematory in Marion.

A service to celebrate the life of Mary Edith will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at West Court Baptist Church with Pastor David Edwards and Rev. Ross Lewis.  Interment will be held at Will Young Cemetery in Yancey County.
