Marietta Ross

Marietta Norman Ross, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, departed to be with the Lord on Monday, September 23, 2019 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital in Asheville.  Her loved ones were by her side.  The daughter of the late Clifton “Cliff” and Vessie Brooks Norman, she was born in McDowell County, North Carolina on June 18, 1939. 

She was preceded in death by, in addition to her parents, infant son, William Thomas Ross, Jr.; one daughter, Debra Lane Ross Wilson; three brothers, Winford Norman, Wayne Norman and Tom Norman; and three sisters, Mildred Norman, Arlene Greene and Marcia Reese.

Marietta had a love for music, was musically talented and directed many choirs, plays and cantatas.  She learned to play the piano by ear and sang with a trio from church.  A former longtime member of Clinchfield Baptist Church, she was recently a member of Glenwood Baptist Church. Marietta was also a member of the Sweet Adelines-Marion Chapter. She had participated, along with her husband, in the McDowell County Senior Games where she had won many awards. 

She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Tom Ross; two daughters, Kim Ross Poteat (Todd) of Kernersville, North Carolina and Melissa Ross Davis (Tony) of Marion; and five siblings, Jeanne Hensley of Marion, Betty Moody of Arden, J.C. Norman (Connie) of Pinehurst, Loree Norman Poteat of Belmont and Elaine Norman Cox (Larry) of Marion.  Marietta is also survived by her precious grandchildren, Lyndsey, Kandis, Emily, Lauren, Jacob, Matthew, Chad and Brandon; thirteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many special friends.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Ross’ life will be on Sunday, September 29, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at Glenwood Baptist Church with Dr. Dennis Love and Rev. Stanley Taylor officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the church.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at McDowell Memorial Park.
