Madge Irene Silver Bivins, 91, of Old Fort, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at Autumn Care of Marion.
She was born in Old Fort on March 31, 1933 to the late Virgil Silver and Sallie Noblitt Silver. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Howard Bivins; two daughters, Sheila Jeanne Bivins Stewart and Kathy Luann Bivins; and five siblings, Helene Silver Frye, Lee Silver, Kermit Silver, Jeanne Silver Collier and Peggy Silver Davis.
Madge was a respected former substitute teacher for the McDowell County School system, where her impact on students was felt beyond the classroom. In addition to her teaching, Madge and her husband Howard owned Indian Creek Campground in Cherokee, North Carolina for 17 years. Madge’s enthusiasm extended beyond her professional endeavors; she was an avid sports fan, particularly for college basketball, a passion that was ignited during her own high school years when she played the sport. A talented seamstress, was also skilled in the kitchen where she delighted in baking cakes for bazaars and other church events. Madge was a member of Old Fort United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Karen Beaupre (Tom); one sister, Shirley Silver Sierra; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Piney Grove Cemetery with Rev. Charles Shirlen officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Piney Grove Cemetery Fund, c/o 1433 Cane Creek Road, Old Fort, NC 28762.
