Mabel S. James

Mabel S. James, loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 at St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospital in Asheville at the age of 96.  The daughter of the late Vance and Easter Nanney Snypes, she was born in McDowell County, North Carolina on August 04, 1921.  

Mabel, who was a wonderful cook, enjoyed working in her flowers and helping in the garden.  She loved her family very much and loved to travel with them, whether it be to the beach or to go camping. Mabel, up until recently, was an active member of Nebo First Baptist Church where she took pride in cooking for the Awana kids at the church. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Dewey James; two sisters, Alva Snypes and Helen Rhinehart; and two brothers, Burley Snypes and William Snypes.

Left to cherish Mabel’s precious memories are four children, Alvin James (Gail) of Nebo, Gail Harris (Grey) of Nebo, Roger James (Frances) of  Pleasant Gardens and Lois Edwards (Randy) of Bentonville, Arkansas; three siblings, Hensley Snypes (Carolyn) of Ridgecrest, Nona Suiter of Sayre, Pennsylvania and Robert Snypes (Joann) of Marion; five grandchildren, Jeff James, Jonathan James, Shane Harris (Maria), Jamie Harris and Brandie Loomis (Patrick); six great grandchildren, Justin James, Joshua James (Michelle), Jordan James, Addison Loomis, Emerson Loomis and Margaret Loomis; and one great-great granddaughter, Luna James.  She is also survived by special friend, Nellie Burk; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Nebo First Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Worley officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
