L. D. Reel

May 28, 1926 — January 13, 2017

 

L. D. Reel, age 90, loving father, grandfather and brother, of the Sugar Hill Community, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 13, 2017 at the McDowell Hospital following a brief illness.  A native of McDowell County, North Carolina, born May 28, 1926, he was the son of the late Lester and Maude Mae Lawing Reel.

 

L. D. was a proud veteran of the United States Navy and served on the USS Sidonia (AKA-42) in the South Pacific.  Known to have had several gardens throughout the community, L.D. will be remembered for the wonderful muscadine and apple jelly along with his fried apple pies that he enjoying making for his family and friends. When he was not tending to his garden, he enjoyed hunting and feeding his chickens.

 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his loving wife, Hazel Evans Reel, who passed away April 05, 2012; one daughter, Regina Reel; and several brothers and sisters.

 

He is survived by two daughters, Dannette Moore and husband, Jeff of Marion, Virginia; and Marsha Sprouse and husband, Billy of Burnsville, North Carolina; one brother, Haskel Reel of Marion, North Carolina; one sister, Erlene Schuknecht and husband, George of Fort Myers, Florida; three grandchildren, Matthew Elliott and wife, April, Grayson Moore and Ali Moore; one step granddaughter, Misty Elliott; four great grandchildren, Kylie Mahan, Logan Elliott and wife, Nicole, Aaron Elliott and wife, Raquel; and Nick Buchanan; and three great-great grandchildren, Lucas, Vena and Marlee.  L. D. is also survived by sister-in-law, Alma Evans; and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

A funeral service will be held on Monday, January 16, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service in Marion with Revs. Bruce Ward and Mark Lawing officiating.  Interment, with military honors provided by the United States Navy, will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.
