Kenneth Ray Sparks

Kenneth Ray Sparks, age 77, of Spruce Pine, departed this life on Monday, September 16, 2024 at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Mitchell County on March 29, 1947 to the late Henry Sparks and Mary Lee Biddix Sparks. Kenneth formerly worked as a cook in fish camps in both Marion and Bakersville. He was a wonderful cook, and it did his heart good to fix meals for his family and friends. He later took a job with Henredon Furniture where he later retired. Kenneth loved his family, and he enjoyed helping them in any way he could, especially his grandson Houston. Having served during the Vietnam War, he was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Sparks; and a sister, Patricia Huskins.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jo Ann Ward Sparks; step-daughter, Debra Hoilman; two grandchildren, Scott Hoilman (Amanda) and David Hoilman (Betty); four great-grandchildren, Houston Hoilman, Justin Silvers, Hayden Hoilman, and Levi McCurry; and three brothers, Richard Sparks (Marilyn), Dennis Sparks (Della), and Jimmy Sparks (Juanita).

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Darrin Waldroup officiating.
