Sylvia “Kay” Cheek Lavender, 83, of Old Fort, North Carolina, passed away Monday, November 14, 2022 at CHS-Blue Ridge in Morganton.
She was born in Iredell County on May 21, 1939 to the late Delmar Worth Cheek and Ruby Blanche Church Cheek.
Kay worked for many years at Ethan Allen with her husband, Norman. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and truly enjoyed her time at church with her friends there. She loved working crossword puzzles, playing computer games, feeding birds in her yard, and spoiling the cocker spaniels she had over the years. Spending time with her family meant the world to her. Kay will be remembered as being comical, spunky, full of life, but most of all, full of God’s love.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Norman Lavender; her son, Gregory Lee Smith; and a sister, Carolyn Plott.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Smith Durham (Caleb); three grandchildren, Amber Nedoff (Jimi), Whitney Linker (Matt), Bryant Durham; five great grandchildren, Breighlee Durham, Slade Linker, London Linker, Kalista Tucker, and Hawkin Nedoff; and one sister, Phyllis Cheek.
The family will hold a memorial service on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 12:00 noon at Friendship Baptist Church in Old Fort with Pastor David Bradshaw officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband Norman.
