Katie Norine Hemphill Logan (AKA Maw Maw) began her journey home with the Lord, February 10, 2024. She was born in McDowell County Oct. 29, 1930 to the late Luther Hemphill, Sr. and Hessie Lytle Hemphill.
Katie was preceded in death by her husband of fifty three years, Charlie Alfonzo Logan; son William Randolph Logan; three brothers, Luther Hemphill, Jr., William A. Hemphill, and James E. Hemphill; three sisters, Martha A Tate, Julia R. McMillan and Caroline Hemphill.`
She attended public school in McDowell County. Katie did housekeeping work in private homes part time and worked at Ridgecrest Baptist Assembly in the summer. She was one of the first three black women to work at Old Fort Finishing Plant and she worked at Collins and Aikman for several years. Maw Maw was a Jill of all trades. She could sew, fix hair, cook, decorate and she liked to make things grow. She had a green thumb. She enjoyed watching NBA Basketball. The LA Lakers was her team. She liked playing games and working puzzles of all kinds. She loved our family get togethers. Her wish was that the family remain close and love one another.
Katie was a dedicated member of Pharr Chapel AME Zion Church. She was a deaconess, president of the Missionary Society, member of the Senior Choir, member of the Kitchen Committee, on the Trustee Board and the church treasurer for many years until her health declined.
Left to cherish her memory are her seven daughters, Charlene Polk, Dora L. Means, Pastor Kathy E. Logan (Norman), Sheila A. O’Neil (James), Carolyn L. Hutchinson (Willie), Cynthia Logan and Loretta M. Carson (Emmett); seventeen grandchildren; twenty nine great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren; four sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
We wish to express our sincere gratitude for the many friends who have shown their love and support by the many acts of kindness during our bereavement. May God bless you.
The family would like to thank Carepartners for all the support and help in caring for our dear mother.
We acknowledge and thank Beam Funeral Service for the final arrangements.
