John William “Bill” Greer, Jr., age 81, of Glenwood, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 1, 2018. Born on August 13, 1937, in McDowell County, Bill was a son of John W. Greer, Sr. and Edith Barnes Greer.
A 1955 graduate of Glenwood High School, Bill had been a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church for many years where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of the choir. He was an avid bowler for many years and was a fan of the Tar Heels ball teams and a baseball fan of the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves. Bill retired from Etta Packaging Company and had previously worked as a heavy equipment operator in highway construction.
Bill was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his son, Travis Greer and a brother, Ray Greer.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pat Bartlett Greer; one son, Marvin Q. Greer and wife, Patsy of Glenwood; one granddaughter, Natasha Greer McCormick and husband, Alex; one great granddaughter, Sierra McCormick, all of Glenwood. Bill is also survived by one brother, Robert Glen Greer and wife, Judy of Commerce, Georgia; one sister, Judy Kuykendall and husband, Bud of Glenwood; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Rev. Jonathan Watson officiating. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the funeral home.
