John Carl Washburn, Sr., 84, of Marion, passed away at home on Saturday, April 6, 2024 with his loving family by his side.
A native of McDowell County, he was born October 9, 1939 to the late Arvey Leonard “Pete” Washburn and Maggie Mae King Washburn. He is also preceded in death by four siblings, Betty McGhee, Ruth Edwards, Joyce Self, and Donald Washburn; and one great grandson, Jensen Seaman.
Johnny was a member of Coxes Creek Free Will Baptist Church. He worked at American Thread for many years. He had perfect attendance for 42 of those years. He was a wonderful provider for his family and passed on the values of hard work to his family. Johnny was faithful to his family. His grandchildren held a very special place in his heart, and he was always doing things with them. He enjoyed raising hogs, beekeeping, and planting his garden. He had also served as a Scout Leader. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alice Self Washburn; two children, John Carl Washburn, Jr. (Tina) and Lorraine Biddix (Dudley); six grandchildren, Cindy Hollifield (Myron), Kim Biddix, Joshua Biddix (Lisa), Nikie Biddix (John), Kelsey Washburn (Dustin), and Stephen Hess; fourteen great grandchildren, Maggie Rometti, Rylee Rometti, Masen Davis, Lila Rometti, Colby Hollifield, Jaxson Hess, Brody Biddix, Caden Hollifield, Remington Wiseman, Serenity Biddix, Asher Seaman, Aiden Seaman, Colt Wiseman, and Salem Seaman; four siblings, Bill Washburn (Gail), Jimmy Washburn (Marie), Jackie Rief, and Irene McKinney; and a special brother-in-law and friend, John Self. He is also survived by a number of special bonus grandchildren who called him “Pawpaw.”
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Coxes Creek Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor TJ Smith and Pastor Dean Owenby officiating. Burial will follow at Burnette Cemetery in Little Switzerland with Pastor Dean Honeycutt and Pastor Coy Wheeler officiating.
