John Max Metcalf
October 12, 1967 – July 1, 2023
John was diagnosed April 2022 with terminal stage 4 bone cancer. They gave him 2 weeks 2 months 2 years. He chose to fight and did just that. He fought for 15 months. Strong is an understatement.
Whether you know John Boy, Johnny Max, or Black Johnny, you knew the one and only John Max Metcalf. No matter what stage in his life you met him, he was always the same smart, brave, and compassionate man. John was born in Asheville on October 12, 1967 to Max Metcalf and Kathleen Rhymer. He grew up in Burnsville and spent most of his adult life in Marion. He loved music, going fishing, arrowhead hunting, and ginseng hunting. He is going to be missed and cherished by many.
Left to grieve him are his children, Kristen Mack (Julian) and her son Lyndsy, Josh Metcalf, and Katherine Metcalf and her daughter Amitty; one stepdaughter, Chasity Johnson (Trinity); his siblings, Kathy Courtney (Bob), Elaine Robinson (Danny), Tommy Metcalf, and Jackie Rhymer (Ashley); nieces and nephews, Gwen Kirby (deceased), Vanessa Johnson, Alexis Rhymer, Colby Rhymer, Dustin Kirby (Kim), Matthew Kirby (Christy), Jonathan Courtney, and Jamie Courtney; 21 great nieces and nephews and 2 great-great nephews.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Beam Funeral Service. A private graveside service for the immediate family will follow with Pastor Ken VanBuskirk officiating.
