Joan Roper Kanipe, 78, of Marion, passed away Saturday morning, April 13, 2024 at UNC Health Blue Ridge.
She was born in McDowell County on February 12, 1946 to the late Woodrow Wilson Roper and Mildred Elliott Roper. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Henry Davis Kanipe; daughter-in-law, Jill Thompson Young; and her brother, Danny Woodrow Roper.
Joan was a skilled pianist who began playing at age nine. For over fifty years, she served as the pianist at West Marion United Methodist Church. Joan most recently was a member of First United Methodist Church of Marion. She worked in bookkeeping for most of her life, and she retired in 2006 from McDowell County Schools. She was a faithful wife, mother, and grandmother who took special care of her husband during his illness.
She is survived by her son, Patrick Charles Young; and her grandson, Daniel Vance Young.
The family will hold a private graveside service at West Marion Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to CenterWell Home Health and the ICU Doctors and Nurses at UNC Health Blue Ridge for the excellent care provided to Joan during her illness.
