Jerry Norman Padgett, affectionately known as “Brud” by his family, of the Pleasant Gardens Community, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital in Asheville at the age of 77. Born in McDowell County, North Carolina on May 01, 1939, he was the son of the late Walter and Edith Parker Padgett.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Jerry served as Petty Officer Second Class and as a Machinist Mate. Following four active years, and four years on reserve, he and his family resided in the Pleasant Gardens Community.
Jerry, for 30 years, worked at Blue Ridge Terrace Apartments and recently was on the Board of Directors as President. He was a member of Liberty Free Will Baptist Church for 50 years and served as Sunday school teacher and superintendent, deacon and trustee. In his spare time, he was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed remodeling homes. He was known to help others on the job or just as a friend and often referred to him as the “Good Samaritan”.
Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 54 years, Betty Lou Padgett of Marion; two sons, Jody Padgett (Julie) of Pleasant Gardens and Lt. Matthew Parker Padgett (Emily) of Butner; one brother, Joe Padgett (Judy) of Marion; and two sisters, Nancy Byrd and Sue Brown, both of Marion. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Devon Padgett, Mackenzie Dodson and Amelia Padgett.
A funeral service to honor the life of Jerry will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Liberty Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Harold Webb officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the United States Navy, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the church.
