Jennifer Crowell Carter passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Jennifer was born in Marion, North Carolina on August 2,1959. She grew up during the 60’s and 70’s in the textile mill village of East Marion. She attended schools in McDowell County and graduated in 1977.
Jennifer’s working life began at Baxter Healthcare where she was employed until 1989. She then went to work for the State of North Carolina at Western Carolina Center (now Iverson Riddle Center), the North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice at the Buncombe Regional Detention Center, and at the North Carolina Department of Correction. Jennifer returned to college while employed at Western Carolina Center and earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. Later on, and while employed at the Department of Correction she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. During these years, Jennifer was also a volunteer with the Guardian Ad Litem program through the North Carolina Administrative offices of the Courts. A Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) is a person the Court appoints to represent and advocate for the best interests of a child in a divorce or parental rights and responsibility case.
Upon acquiring her Bachelor’s degree, Jennifer was employed by the Buncombe County Department of Social Services as a Social Worker. She completed investigations and assessments of child abuse and neglect for 10 years with that agency. She completed approximately 1000 investigations during her time at that post.
Jennifer was a member of the Presbyterian Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) being eligible for such membership by the service of both her maternal and paternal ancestors during the Revolutionary War (i.e. McConnell and Carter lineage).
Jennifer was a dedicated volunteer with the Buncombe County Literacy Council & Horse Sense of the Carolinas & the Tarheel Weimaraner Rescue Program, providing loving foster care for aging Weimaraner Rescues.
Jennifer was preceded in death by her parents Wilton E Carter Sr. and Frances Stanley Carter. Also, her beloved older brother, William Walter Carter (Mac).
Jennifer is survived by her two children; Corey Sisk and his family {Denise, Brandy, Lennon, Jake, Haley & Adrianne of Morganton, North Carolina and Brittany Sisk and her precious son, Noah of Asheville, North Carolina. Also surviving are her sister Susie Kanipe of Princeton, Kentucky and her brother WE Carter Jr. (Sandy) and his wife Barbara of Hickory, North Carolina. Jennifer is also survived by ten nieces and nephews, eight of their children & many beloved cousins and extended family members.
A service to celebrate Jennifer’s life will be held on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Marion with Pastor Jacob Douylliez and Pastor David Blackmon officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
