James Calvin Swofford, age 91, of the North Cove Community, passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, August 12, 2019 after a long battle of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. The beloved son of the late Lucian Richard (Dick) Swofford and Hattie Mae Fortner Swofford was born on October 2, 1927 in McDowell County.
Preceded in death his siblings, Everett Swofford, Ruth Armilda Rose, Lindol Blann Swofford, Helen Lucille McKinney, and Irene Jo Clark.
James is survived by, siblings, Mary “Susie” Rogers, Clara Cordell, Barbara Blankenship, Dexter Swofford (Doris); sister-in-law, Inge Swofford; daughters, Cookie Hollifield (Ronald), Francine Swofford, Marilyn Jordan (Stanley), and Jennifer Swofford, all of Marion; and daughter, Donna Schrum (Gary) of Sherrills Ford in Catawba County. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew Johnson (Genia), Ryan Hollifield, Nathan Hollifield, Andy Pendley (Neui), John Pendley (Jacqui), Josh Pendley (Brook), Chad McPeters (Valerie), Melissa Dean, Graham Brown, Robert Sanders (Brienna), Stacey Terry (Forrester) and Alex Painter (Abby); several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at North Cove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2019 with the Pastor Richard Merritt officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
