James Calhoun Pool

James Calhoun Pool, loving father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at the Charles George VA Medical Center’s Hospice & Palliative Care in Asheville.  His loving family was by his side.  A resident of the Pleasant Gardens community, James was born in McDowell County, North Carolina on June 15, 1927 and was the son of the late Clarence and Nellie Noblitt Pool. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Vicki Poteat Pool, who passed away April 16, 1982; and his siblings, Margie Hagan, Marie Robinson, Juanita Helgoth, Frances King, Ruth Staton, Louise Young, C.W. Pool, Theodore Pool and Edith Ledbetter.

A loving father, grandfather and brother, James, who lived to work, owned and operated his own logging company and sawmill and worked up until his late 80’s.  He was a charter member of the Pleasant Gardens Ruritan.  A proud veteran of the United States Army, for over 60 years James was a member of Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church. 

Left to cherish his memories are three sons, Harold Pool (Joyce), Gary Pool (Kathy) and Scottie Pool (Connie); two daughters, Joan Carol Glenn (Mickey) and Debbie Ledford (Mike); two brothers, Boyce Pool (Wanda) and Tommy Pool (Jean); and two sisters, Judy Davis (Spencer) and Esther Randolph.  James is also survived by eight grandchildren, Dr. Steve Glenn, Mitch Glenn, Jennifer Bailey, James Pool, Chris Pool, Travis Pool, Tracey Simmons and Erica Pool; twelve great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Charlotte Hughes; brother-in-law, Fred Staton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 19, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church.  A service to celebrate his life will follow at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Josh Hayes officiating.  Interment, with military honors provided by the United States Army, will follow at Pleasant Gardens Baptist Church Cemetery.
