James Morris Patton, Sr., 88, of Nebo, passed away at home on Monday morning, December 11, 2023 with his loving family by his side.
He was born on April 28, 1935. In birth order, Jim was the ninth out of ten children for Charlie Logan Patton and Della Minerva Epley Patton. He was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings: Ann, Bessie, Rae, Garmon, Jack, Lester, Dorothy, Gene and Burton.
Jim was proud to be an American. He served his country from 1957 to 1959 in the US Army. He did basic training in Fort Riley, Kansas and served in Baumholden, Germany.
He was married for 60 years to Virginia Mae Childers Patton (Judy) who was the love of his life and also preceded him in death. Judy and Jim had a great marriage and enjoyed traveling together, working together and doing mission work together. They traveled to every state in the Union, Canada, Mexico and several places in the Caribbean.
Jim was a hard-working, gentle soul who loved to garden. He always saw the possibility in the seed and beauty in the flower. He was gifted with his hands and could fix most anything. He saw purposes in things others would discard.
He loved the Lord and had a special place in his heart for Victory Temple, Snow Hill Methodist and Pinnacle Church. He cared for his beloved wife, Judy for many years during her extended illnesses.
Left to cherish his memory are Genny Patton, Jimmy Patton (Ronda), granddaughters Rebekah (Aaron) Wright, Katelin (Josh) Willis and Genna Patton (Isaac), great grandchildren Garrette, Brooklyn, Faithlyn, Gracelyn, and Hadley. A brother-in-law, Jim Childers and lots of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Jim leaves lots of good friends from the Nebo/Dysartsville community, Victory Temple Church and Snow Hill Church.
Jim was a member of Victory Temple Full Gospel Church and loved to greet everyone and make sure they had a bulletin.
He had several favorite sayings, one was: Don't worry about the cow being poor, just drink the milk and ask for more. Another one was Warning: You can overload a Studebaker truck. He lived his life honoring these expressions by casting his cares on the Lord and giving thanks in everything.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Victory Temple Full Gospel Church with Rev. Pete McCombs officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow the service at Pinnacle Community Church Cemetery.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills and the Charles George VA Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the McDowell Good News Club, PO Box 1504, Marion, NC 28752 or to the Gideon’s.
