In the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 28, 2016, James “Jim” McGarr, age 83, of Nebo, North Carolina, loving husband, father and grandfather, went home to be with the Lord while at Four Seasons Compassion for Life’s Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, North Carolina. A native of Caldwell County, North Carolina, born May 05, 1933, he was the son of the late William and Verna Barnett McGarr.
Jim, up until his passing, along with his family have owned and operated Roseland Florist on Main Street in Marion since 1964. For 23 years, he proudly served in the United States Army National Guard. Jim was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Marion for 52 years and the Marion Rotary Club. He was known for his famous spaghetti sauce that was served on each election day for the Marion Rotary fundraiser up until his health began to decline.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one brother, Bob McGarr.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Ethel Nail McGarr, who Jim said was the most important event of his life; one daughter, Karen McGarr of Hendersonville; two sons, Kevin McGarr and Kelly McGarr, both of Nebo; and two grandchildren, Sarah Gibbs Carpenter (Carson) and Gracelynn McGarr.
Due to inclement weather, the celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Monday, January 09, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Marion’s Fellowship Hall with Rev. Jacob Dovylliez officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall.
