On the evening of Sunday, May 8, 2022, Jack Auburn Wood went to be with his heavenly Father at Mission Hospital. He was born on January 10, 1951 in Buncombe County to the late William and Mozelle Hilton Wood.
As a young man, Jack achieved his Eagle Scout. He served his community in many aspects such as, The Fraternal Order of Police, Mt. Mitchell Shriner’s Club, was a member of the Mystic Tie Lodge-237 and a former County Commissioner from 1986 until 1994. Jack worked a total of forty-one years in law enforcement. At the age of sixteen, he started as a radio operator under his father, Chief Bill Wood. Following his degree in Criminal Justice, he taught at Mayland Community College and was the director of the basic law enforcement program. He later worked for the NC Department of Insurance investigating in the fraud division. After retirement, he came back to work at the Marion Police Department for the Community Police Program.
Jack was a loving husband, father and friend. He enjoyed raising money for the Shriner’s Childrens’ Home and mentoring young adults which included many of his son’s friends. Jack also enjoyed pier fishing and car shows. He was a member of the Nebo First Baptist Church where he served as Director of Security. His passing is not only a loss to the family but to the entire community as well.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of twenty-one years, Patti Sisk Wood; one son, David “Andy” Wood (Chelsea Martin); one sister, Gale Jones; four sisters-in-law, Dianne Bennick, Kay Simmons, Sherry Jones (Johnny); Debbie Poteat (Bill) and numerous nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2022 at Nebo First Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Doug Worley and Ms. Lisa Morgan officiating. Those who wish to listen from the convenience of the parking area are encouraged to turn the car radio or transmitter radio to 87.7. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service at Oak Grove Cemetery.
