Herbert Augustus Henry, better known as Sonny to family and friends, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Mountain Ridge Health & Rehab. He was 90 years old.
A native of McDowell County, he was born November 30, 1934 to the late Geter T. Henry and Gladys Thomas Henry.
Early in life, Herbert began his journey working alongside his father at the family sawmill, instilling in him a strong work ethic that would carry throughout his life. Later, he began a career at Air Preheater, but it was the waste removal service that he owned and operated for over 40 years that truly defined his legacy. In a remarkable display of integrity, Herbert never raised his prices, earning him respect and friendship from those he served.
Herbert was a devoted member of the Community Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee, providing guidance and support to his congregation. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, influencing his actions and his interactions in the community.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Herbert cherished the simple pleasures in life. He took great joy in sitting on his porch, watching the sunrise, something that brought him peace and reflection. His hobbies were varied and included home improvement projects, watching westerns, enjoying antique cars, planting gardens, and playing Bingo. A true racing enthusiast, he was a fan of both NASCAR and drag racing, often sharing these moments with his special nephew, Alen Henry, who he loved dearly like a son.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Conley Henry; a daughter, Joann Logan; and four siblings, Betty Mitchell, Hattie Doris Williamson, Roberta Rutherford, and Jimmy Henry.
He is survived by six children, Keith Conley (Sondra), Donna Henry, Sonya Henry, Tracy Crisp (Ricky), Kim Mackey (Derrick), and Derrick Berry; thirteen grandchildren, Arielle Conley, Ariana Conley, Chasity Henry, Deraine Henry, Brandon Henry, Talia Dixon (John), Cambria Wilson (Von), Alexia Mackey (Kenny), Julishia Berry, Kaneshia Berry, Miriah Rutherford, Ayiah Rutherford, and Tony Logan; six great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Quanté, Diamond, Godrick, Malachi, and Alessandra; four great-great-grandchildren, Rhylan, Ronan, Quanté, Jr., and Vegas; four sisters, Opal Rankin, Arnell O’Neil (Harry), Shirley Henry, and Cleo Daugherty (Edward); and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. in the Beam Celebration Center. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at McDowell Memorial Park.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Rose Avery, Antoine Lindsey, the staff of Mountain Ridge, Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, and to all the family members for their service in giving care to Mr. Henry.
