Hazel Janell Pittman Hensley, born on December 21, 1936, in Buncombe County, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2024. She passed at her residence in Old Fort, surrounded by her beloved family.
Hazel's professional journey began in the local factories notably at Old Fort Finishing and Kearfott. Her love for children ultimately led her to establish her own daycare. Later, she contributed her talents as an Early Head Start Aide with McDowell County Schools, where she devoted over ten years before her retirement.
A longtime member of Old Fort Wesleyan Church, Hazel loved the Lord wholeheartedly. She fully believed in the power of prayer. Her sense of humor brought joy to many, giving her a unique ability to connect with those around her. She was known for her love of music in all its forms and for her cooking. Hazel was faithful and passionate in all things.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Debra Fox; grandchildren, Jacob Hensley, Samantha Haney (Dustan), Joshua Pass (Annah), Jamie Mills (Sam), Haleigh Mills, Sierra Hensley, and Travis Fox; great-grandchildren, Aaron Haney, Scarlett Haney, Ruth Haney, Isla Pass, Scotty Waters, and Charlie Waters. In addition, she is remembered fondly by her sister, Sylvia Vess, daughter-in-law, Tonia Hampton, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.
Hazel is preceded in death by her beloved husband who she married in 1955, Guy Hensley, and her son, Rickey Hensley. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Lee Pittman and Josie Talma Wheeler Pittman, and her siblings: Margaret Elliott, Charles Pittman, Cecil Pittman, and Frances Parker.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Old Fort Wesleyan Church. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Revs. Jeffrey Parker, Donnie Massingill, and Caleb Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Bethlehem Community Cemetery.
