Gladys Patterson

Gladys Sumlin Patterson, age 85, of the Dysartsville Community, passed away Friday, May 5, 2017 at her residence.  She was the daughter of the late Rufus E. Sumlin and Edna Washburn Sumlin. 

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Rodger D. Patterson; one son, Gary L. Patterson; grandson, Jonathan C. Patterson; three sisters, Ruby S. Rhom, Janie S. Burnette and Eula Sumlin; and three brothers, Jay Sumlin, Willie Sumlin and R. E. Sumlin.

Gladys, who was a 1950 graduate of Glenwood High School, enjoyed gardening, working with her flowers and spending time outdoors watching birds.  She was a member of Dysartsville Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughters, Susan P. Monroe, Debra P. Robinson and Sandra P. Miller; devoted daughter-in-law, Cynthia Patterson; one brother, James E. Sumlin; and two sisters, Mary S. Childers and Shirley S. Sorrells; five grandsons, Chip Miller, Kevin Monroe, Brent Monroe, Ronnie L. Patterson and Michael Patterson; and one great grandson, Gavan Hollifield.  Gladys is also survived by a special sister-in-law, Betty Sumlin; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Rev. Pete McCombs and Mr. Jimmy Buckner officiating.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home. 

A private interment will be held at the Western Carolina Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Rodger.
