George Atwood Digges, IV passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 5, 2025 in Marion after a brief period of declining health. He was 67 years old.
He was born in Asheville on March 25, 1957 to Ruth Gresham Adams and the late George Atwood Digges, III.
George dedicated many years of his career to serving the veterans of North Carolina, retiring in 2023 from his role as the maintenance director at the North Carolina State Veterans Home. His diligence in his work earned him the respect and admiration of both his colleagues and the veterans he served. A proud veteran himself, George served honorably in the United States Coast Guard. His military service shaped his principles of duty and respect, which he carried into all aspects of his life.
In addition to his professional achievements, George held his family close to his heart. He cherished the time spent with his mother, often offering her care and companionship. Outside of work and family, George was an avid fisherman, relishing the serenity of trout fishing in the mountains and the excitement of saltwater fishing in the Gulf. These moments by the water brought him immense joy and were often shared with friends and family alike. George also had a deep appreciation for live music, enjoying genres ranging from bluegrass to the vibrant sounds of Jimmy Buffett. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Those left to cherish his memory, in addition to his mother Ruth Adams, are two children, Sara Hicks (Kenny) and Travis Digges (Racyne); five grandchildren, Laine, Rylee, Kayla, Wade, Kenlee; three great- grandchildren, Lucas, Zayne, and Cooper; and one sister, Sandie Davis.
A memorial service will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 21, 2025.
