Genevieve Edwards Whittington

Genevieve “Gen” Edwards Whittington, 86, of Nebo, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 2, 2025 at CarePartners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville.

A native of Yancey County, Gen was born November 2, 1938 to the late Lyda Edwards and Oxie Hensley Edwards. 

For a number of years, Gen worked in the kitchen department at the J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center, formerly the Western Carolina Center. She was a faithful and beloved member of Pinnacle Baptist Church who was wholly devoted to her Lord, her church, and to reading her Bible. Gen was a kind and loving lady who loved her family dearly. She enjoyed traveling when she was able, especially with her dear friend, Esther. She enjoyed the beauty of flowers and received great joy by planting and caring for them. She will be dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hiram Whittington; three children, Michael Edwards, Jerry Whittington, and Gail Eller; two grandsons, Bobby Eller and David Whittington; and six siblings, Junior Edwards, Marshall Edwards, Harold Edwards, Arlene Anglin, Jerri Grindstaff, and Gwen Sumlin.

She is survived by one son, Jeff Whittington; six grandchildren, Leslie Freeman (James), Chris Eller, Matthew Whittington, Daniel Whittington, Mark Whittington, and Molly Eller; six great-grandchildren, Tanner Freeman, Kayleigh Freeman, Michala Eller, Marc Eller, Azi Imani, and Addie Eller; and one sister, Diane McKinney (Ronnie).

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 6, 2025 from 3:00 until 4:00 p.m. at Pinnacle Baptist Church. The funeral service will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the church with Pastor Mark Hollifield officiating, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
