Fred Grant DeViney, Jr.

June 6, 1934 — February 12, 2021

Fred Grant DeViney, Jr., 86, of Nebo, North Carolina, passed away Friday, February 12, 2021 at Rose Hill Retirement Community. He was born in Mecklenburg County on June 06, 1934 to the late Fred DeViney, Sr. and Mary Mathis DeViney.

Fred worked as a credit manager for Citigroup. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, having served for nearly 11 years. He was a medic in Korea, although he spent most of his tenure stationed at Andrews Air Force Base. He was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal in 1960, the Air Force Longevity Service Award, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, the Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

When not busy telling stories of his war days, he was the best Christmas decorator, tree topper placer, fixer of all things, Nebo Lady Bears basketball coacher, dad to his granddaughter when he didn’t have to be. Fred checked the newspaper every morning for two things; his own obituary and the stocks. If he did not find his obituary then he would look to see if he made any money that day…they went hand in hand he said. He was an active board member of the McDowell County Senior Center and proudly helped to coordinate the senior games before he retired to Rosehill.  Fred enjoyed coin collecting, and he was a faithful member of the American Mint. He was a proud husband, dad, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and gentle mentor.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Louise Gibbs DeViney.

He is survived by one son, Jeff DeViney; a stepson, David Cannon; one brother, Coleman Ray DeViney; a granddaughter, Erin White (Will); great grandson, Grant White; granddaughters, Jordan Cannon, Morgan Lytle, Sarah Grace DeViney, MaryBeth Stilwell and grandsons Brian DeViney and Chris DeViney.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at McDowell Memorial Park at 11:30 a.m. Military honors will be rendered by the United States Air Force.

Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. DeViney’s memory are asked to consider, McDowell County Senior Center, 100 Spaulding Road, Marion, North Carolina 28752.
