"Eudy" Carthel Lee Cuthbertson

“Eudy” Carthel Lee Cuthbertson, age 82, of Marion, NC, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2016 at Rose Hill Retirement Community.  He was born August 30, 1933 in McDowell County to the late Hubert Carthel and Vera Cuthbertson. 

Eudy volunteered with The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America for more than a decade and served as assistant scoutmaster as well as scoutmaster.  He drove the Troop 210 scout bus to destinations across Western North Carolina.  He camped and hiked with his scouts in all seasons, always bringing up the rear.  Eudy wanted to make sure no boy was ever left behind.

We will miss Eudy’s mischievous grin and the way his blue eyes smiled, too, when he made us laugh.  Rose Hill will miss its “Mayor”.  The halls there are quieter now that he isn’t in front to greet all who enter.  Eudy was a man who loved life, loved dancing and loved people.  He never met a stranger, or at least he never let you stay one for long. 

In addition to his parents, Eudy is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Buff Cuthbertson, who he married on September 19, 1959; a sister, Betty Cuthbertson Robinson and a brother, Robert Cuthbertson.

Eudy is survived by his son, Brently Carthel Cuthbertson and his wife, Crystal and two grandsons, Bryson and Corbett, all of Orlando, Fla.; three nieces, Susan Robinson Taylor of Marion, NC, Ragan Robinson of Statesville, NC and Lacy Taylor Massarani of Cary, NC and one nephew, Jeremy Compton of Marion, NC.

A celebration of Eudy’s life will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. at East Marion United Methodist Church with Pastor Phillip Tate officiating.  Burial, with military honors provided by the United States Army, will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.
