On Friday, December 14, 2018 at around 6:48 p.m., Ernest Whitson, Jr., who was affectionately known by many as “Whit”, was called to come home by the grace of God at Mission Hospital-McDowell in Marion. A lifelong resident of McDowell County, North Carolina, he was born September 17, 1954 to the late Ernest and Lucy Vaughn Whitson.
Known to have been a hard worker, Whit loved to joke and watch people laugh. He enjoyed visiting flea markets and fishing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Darlene Walls Whitson; four siblings, Betty Causby (Gary), Sammy Whitson, Arlene Crowe and Marty Hensley; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mike and Mary Alice Galloway. Whit is also survived by his canines who he called his “girls”, Bella Rose, Dot-Dot, Roo-Roo and Sugar Foot.
Whit had become frustrated that due to his health he could no longer look after his spouse and his “girls” like he had always done, but Whit, you can now and always be able to look over them.
A celebration of Whit’s life will be held on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home.
Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mr. Whitson’s memory are asked to consider the Whitson family, 2170 Rutherford Road, Marion, North Carolina 28752.
