Emerson Barksdale, a beloved member of his community, passed away on April 23, 2025, at Memorial Mission Hospital. He was born on May 22, 1942, in Washington, Georgia, and dedicated his life to being a kind and generous man. Emerson epitomized the values of love and community. He cherished his role as a husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend, and his family truly was his world.
Throughout his life, Emerson found joy in the simple pleasures of fishing, gardening, and beekeeping. He had a deep appreciation for both nature and community, often sharing the bounty of his garden and honey from his hives with neighbors. His appreciation for the outdoors was a defining aspect of his personality.
Emerson was also a devoted member of the Story Memorial Presbyterian Church, where he contributed in various roles over the years. His commitment to his faith and community was evident through his continuous service and engagement, making a lasting impact on those who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Betty Garden Barksdale, with whom he shared a loving marriage. Emerson leaves behind his son, Greg Barksdale and his wife, Gail, and his brother Irvin Barksdale and his wife, Wilma; his sister, Demaris McGuire and her husband, Joe; his brother-in-law, Charles Garden and his wife, Sharon; as well as his granddaughters, Alexis Barksdale and Sarah Barksdale. Emerson is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Emerson is preceded in death by his parents, Albert Lamar Barksdale and Marguerite Johnson Barksdale.
A visitation to honor Emerson’s memory will take place on April 26, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Story Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 174 Shady Lane, Marion, NC 28752. This will be followed by a funeral service starting at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Harold Webb and Mr. Chuck Abernathy officiating. Interment will follow in the Spruce Pine City Cemetery.
Emerson’s life was one filled with love and dedication to his family and community, and he will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege to know him. Memorials may be made to the Story Memorial Presbyterian Church 174 Shady Lane, Marion NC 28752.
