Elsie Henry Logan, age 96, of Marion, NC, passed away on Friday, May 26, 2023, at her home in Marion. Elsie was born in McDowell County, NC, on November 20, 1926, to the late Curtis Henry and Mary Will Carson Henry. She attended Hudgins High School, where she played basketball, as well as other activities. Elsie was a member of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. She served in various ministries, including hospitality, usher board, senior choir, women’s missionary service and various others. She was a sister of The Daughters of Zion Chapter #2 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a honorary member of the Board of Directors for the Historic Carson House. She was also a Volunteer Ombudsman for The McDowell County Community Advisory Committee. She worked for many years at Marion Manufacturing as a cloth inspector and she retired from Baxter Laboratories as a line filler. In addition to working outside the home, Elsie and her husband, Earnest Sr., kept busy raising their three children. She later married Isaac Logan Sr. Together they enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening and helping raise their grandchildren. Elsie had a joy for baking. She loved to share her baked goods with family, friends, and church family. She was deeply devoted to her family and church family as the “Mother of the Church”. She will be greatly missed.

Elsie was preceded in death by her first husband, Earnest Rutherford Sr. and her second husband, Isaac Logan Sr. Those left to cherish her memory include children Earnest E. Rutherford (Nikki Hill-Rutherford), Shirley Sumpter (Benjamin Sumpter Jr.), Delbert Rutherford (Nakki Rutherford) and Isaac Logan, Jr. (Ann Logan). She had eight grandchildren, Shelly Gillyard (Ron), Sharla Bridgett (Parde), Benjamin Sumpter III (Katja), Steven Fields, Alexandra Davis (Jonathan), Robyn Murphy, Rosalind Downer (Richard) and Keith Fields. She also had thirteen great-grandchildren, Chandler Gillyard, Chase Gillyard, Ryan Gillyard, Hunter Bridgett, Hendrix Bridgett, Casoundra Walls, Xander Davis, Jaxon Davis, Joel Murphy (Leeza), Daven Murphy, Aryel Matthews (Daniel), Alyssa Downer, and Logan Downer. She also had many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she treasured. A special thank you to the following: Steven Fields, for his devoted care for the past year; Thressa O’Neal, for many years of caring and companionship and New Horizon Home Care, for their tireless efforts in providing care.

Her funeral will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023, at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Michael Smith will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church. Burial will follow at McDowell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in her name to the building fund of Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 115 E. Wilhemenia Street, Marion, NC 28752.
