Edna Queen Vess, 97, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away Thursday, February 11, 2021 at her son’s residence in Morganton.
She was born in Mitchell County on April 08, 1923 to the late Andrew and Molly Chandler Queen.
She worked on the cafeteria staff for McDowell County Schools for many years. Edna loved the Lord and her family. She was a lifelong member of Yancey Street Baptist Church where she served in several capacities, including organizing meals when there was sickness, a death, or for homecoming. She was always ready to go anywhere whether it was a trip or to eat out.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Vess; two sisters, Faye Davis and Ruth Howell; and a brother, Roy Queen.
Survivors include her two children, Peggy Wilson (Homer) and Hugh “Bobby” Vess (Rebecca); five grandchildren, Kim Hefner, Ben Vess, Sherry Tuttle, Derek Hodges, and Heather Hodges; ten great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Louise Duncan and Betty Carpenter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Mrs. Vess’ life will be held on Sunday, February 14, 2021 at Yancey Street Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Revs. Dean Owenby and Wayne Tuttle will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service. A private interment will take place on Monday at McDowell Memorial Park.
