Dwight A. Upton, age 82, of the Pleasant Gardens Community, passed away on Monday, September 05, 2016 at the North Carolina Veterans Home in Black Mountain. Born in Rutherford County, North Carolina on May 06, 1934, he was the son of the late William and Carma Flack Upton.
Having been the youngest of twelve children, Dwight was raised on a dairy farm in the Sunshine Community of Rutherford County. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he proudly served as a radar operator and was stationed in Alaska. Following service, Dwight worked as a lathe operator for several furniture manufacturing companies. A man who had a clean sense of humor, he was a family minded man who truly loved his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by three sons, Eric Dwight Upton (Joyce), Scott A. Upton (Michael Romines); and Kent I. Upton (Kathy); four grandchildren, Susan Finch, Joseph Upton, Sarah Upton and Samuel Upton; five great grandsons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 09, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church with Chaplain Jack Taylor officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the United States Air Force, will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., prior to the service, at the church.
