Doris “Jewell” Whiting, 73, of Marion, North Carolina and formerly of Newport News, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 02, 2022 at her home.
She grew up in Pacolet, South Carolina and was born on February 03, 1949 to the late Leroy Whiting and Frances Sexton Whiting. She is also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Whiting.
Jewell entered the U.S. Army at age 30. She served for 6 years and earned the rank of Sergeant. Following this, she continued her service to her country and fellow veterans by working 30 years with the Hampton Roads VA Hospital. She is survived by her brother, Fred Whiting and wife Susie; her sister, Judi Whiting Jarvis and husband Bruce; her special nieces and nephews, Anndrea Beams, Greg Boone, Matt Jarvis, Kelly Whiting, Alex Whiting, Tony Whiting, Bobby Whiting, Jessica Cannon, and Heather Whiting and their families; as well as many close friends and bonus nieces.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, September 23, 2022 at 12:00 noon at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to CarePartners Hospice and Palliative Care McDowell, especially Meghan Stackable, Diane Brooks, and her caregiver, Cindy McCombs.
