Doris Tate Burgin, 97, of Marion, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, July 22, 2024.

A native of McDowell County, she was born November 28, 1926 to the late George Logan Tate and Ola Clara Early Tate. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Burgin, who passed away in 1975.

 Doris was a longtime member of Story Memorial Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking, and canning. Shortly after high school, when her future husband Howard Burgin went to WWII in Germany, she went to Washington, DC and worked for the FBI fingerprinting. Ultimately returning to NC, raising a family, and retiring from NC Cooperative Extension Services. She loved playing the piano in house and gave many lessons.

 She is survived by her four children, Carolyn Burgin Kanipe (Dean), Glenda Burgin Wilkinson, Brenda Burgin Ross (David), and Larry Burgin (Ruth); six grandchildren, Matthew Burgin, Jennifer Whitson, Alyssa Kanipe, Jonathan Kanipe, Kelly Wilkinson, and Laura Wilkinson; seven great-grandchildren, Landon Whitson, Jacob Whitson, Zack Whitson, Alice Kanipe, Anna Kanipe, Mae Kanipe, and Lily Kanipe; two great great-grandchildren, Lucas Whitson and Baker Whitson; and 3 special nieces, Cathy Tate Ice, Nancy Tate Thornton, and Dixie Curtis Buckner. Additionally, Martha Jamison, and Kay Carswell as special friends and caregivers. 

 A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Beam Celebration Center with Rev. Philip Tate officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery with family only.

 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Story Memorial Presbyterian Church or a hospice of one’s choice.
