Donald Michael "Mike" McKenzie, 65, of Chimney Rock, peacefully departed this life on the morning of Friday, September 20, 2024.
He was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan on March 14, 1959 to the late Donald McKenzie and Barbara Jean Symms Jones.
He was a beloved chef whose culinary journey spanned 50 years. Mike discovered his passion for cooking at an early age, and his talent flourished in the realm of French cuisine. Throughout his extensive career, Mike showcased his culinary expertise in a number of restaurants.
Beyond the kitchen, he embraced the serene aspects of life that brought him joy. He found tranquility in sailing and fly fishing, hobbies that reflected his love for nature and the peacefulness that was evident in his everyday life. He spent a portion of his life in Colorado Springs, Colorado before later moving to the Florida Keys where he raised his sons. Mike considered the Keys his own personal paradise. He had a deep interest in environmental science and a true appreciation for earth and all things living.
He is survived by his two sons, Ethan McKenzie (Alyssa) and Scott McKenzie (Ashley); four siblings, Jeanne Jackson (Rick), Sally Suchodolski (Chuck), Stephanie Mosley (Don), and Jeff Jones; step-father, Robert Jones; and his faithful companion, Beth White.
In honor of Mike's love for the ocean, he will be laid to rest at a later date in an eternal reef in the Florida Keys.
