Mr. Carl Martin, age 95 of Marion, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Autumn Care of Marion. Born on June 15, 1922, he was a son of the late Lattie and Vinnie Cuthbertson Martin.
Carl worked during World War II at Glenn & Martin Aircraft Plant in Baltimore, Maryland for two years. He then worked for Burlington Industries for fifty-two years and was also a member of the volunteer rescue squad in McDowell for twenty years. He served as a deacon and the treasurer for the First Free Will Baptist Church of Marion for twenty-five years. Carl loved to go fishing with his friends and grandchildren, but his biggest joy in life was spending time with his wife of seventy-five years, and his family.
He was preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, two brothers, Lewis Martin and Paul Martin, as well as a sister, Hazel McCormick.
Carl Leaves behind his wife of seventy-five years, Pearl Gouge Martin, as well as two daughters, Patricia Elliott of Oklahoma City, and Betty M. Jackson (Joe) of Marion, NC; three grandchildren, Jeffery Kelly (Vandera) of Aurora, CO, Kim Burkett (William) of Cumming, GA, and Christopher Elliott (Christine) of Roswell, GA. He also leaves behind three great-grandchildren; Brittany and Blake Burkett, and Mason Elliott; one sister, Christine Loftis (Joe) of Marion, NC. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service to celebrate Carl’s life will be held on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service with Rev. Eddie Kirkpatrick and Rev. Pat Buchanan officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., one hour prior to the service in the chapel. A private committal will take place at McDowell Memorial Park.
