Capt. Jerry W. Poteat (Ret.)

Captain Jerry W. Poteat, age 76, of Marion, North Carolina, passed away on the morning of Tuesday, July 14, 2020 at Memorial Campus of Mission Hospital in Asheville following a brief illness.  A native of McDowell County, North Carolina, born on April 18, 1944, he was the son of the late John and Georgia Sherlin Poteat.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sandra Young Poteat, who passed away on July 29th, 2019, and one brother, Billy Poteat.

A devoted and amazing father, grandfather and friend, Jerry, following many years, retired as a Captain with the Marion Fire Department where he proudly and honorably served the citizens of Marion and McDowell County.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church in Marion.

Mr. Poteat is survived by his three children, Kevin Poteat (Lisa), Kim Hensley (Mike) and Christy Taylor (Jeremy); five grandchildren, Jordan Corl (Tim), Alex Poteat, Hayley Taylor and Brooklynn and Victoria Hensley; one sister, Susie Poteat; two brothers, Benny Poteat and Kenny Poteat.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held  Saturday, August 8, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at Cross Memorial Church. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the church fellowship hall prior to the service.
