Arthur Lewis Gunter, age 90, of Nebo, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2017 at the Charles George VA Medical Center’s Hospice & Palliative Care in Asheville. His loving family was at his side. A native of Graham County, North Carolina, born May 20, 1927, he was the son of the late Wayne and Flora Brown Gunter.
At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the United States Army during WWII. Arthur later retired from the transportation department at Ethan Allen. Following retirement, he enjoyed traveling, but mostly working on church projects and his vegetable garden. He was a longtime member of the Rocky Pass Free Will Baptist Church.
Arthur is survived by his wife of seventy-three years, Roxie Kirkland Gunter; one daughter, Jean G. Pool (Thomas); two sons, Jerry Gunter (Gloria) and Michael Gunter (Kim); three brothers, Doug Gunther, David Gunther and Danny Gunther; seven grandchildren, Dana Brewer (Tom), Steven Todd Pool (Tonja), Tonia VanDyke (Jason), Christie Dietrich (Ken), Angela Jerri Mayfield (Baxter), Michael Gunter (Angie) and Suzanne Garland (Jarred); and seventeen great grandchildren.
A graveside service, with military honors, will be held on Monday, September 18, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at the Rocky Pass Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Alan Sailors officiating. The family will receive friends Monday, September 18, 2017 at Beam Funeral Service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Rocky Pass Free Will Baptist Church Building Fund at 6988 Harmony Grove Road Nebo, North Carolina 28761.
