Ada Mae Parker Cuthbertson, age 101, of Nebo, North Carolina went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Rosehill Retirement Community with her loving family by her side. Ada was born on August 1, 1917 in McDowell County to the late Reverend C.C. and Bessie Huffman Parker.
Her early years were spent in the Jacktown area of McDowell County where she attended Glenwood School. At an early age she went to work at Marion Hosiery Mill where she recalls walking from her home to the mill until she found a place to board during the week. She also accompanied her father on weekends as he preached in churches in McDowell, Mitchell and Yancey Counties often traveling by train or a Model T Ford. She was the oldest of eight siblings, her only living sibling Max Parker of High Shoals, North Carolina. In 1936 she married Lloyd Cuthbertson and moved in with his parents at their farm in the Fairview/Harmony Grove section of McDowell County where she resided until February 2018. Ada Mae retired from the McDowell County Schools where she was school secretary at Nebo School for twenty-three years. Prior to going to work at Nebo School she worked at Elizabeth James Full Fashion Hosiery Mill.
She and Lloyd had three children, Charlie Mae Holland-Mace (Wayne), Martha Ann Cuthbertson (deceased at an early age), and Dr. Lloyd Cuthbertson, Jr. (Kaye). She is also the foster mother of Jessie Garland Lawing who came to live with them following the death of her parents. Ada Mae has two grandchildren, Eugene Holland (Gina) of Nebo and Layne Cuthbertson (Margaret) of Huntersville, North Carolina. Three great grandchildren, Lauren Holland of Atlanta, Georgia and Palmer and Rawlings Cuthbertson of Huntersville, North Carolina; a foster granddaughter, Renata Crawley (Greg) of Nebo; and three foster great-grandchildren, Abigale, Eli and Georgia Rose Crawley of Nebo.
A funeral service to celebrate Ada Mae’s life will take place Sunday, February 24, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. at Harmony Grove Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., two hours prior to the service at the church. The interment will take place following the service at the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
